Building new highend pc, need help

Hi everyone,

First time post on the forum, been watching videos for a long time!

I was wondering if I could call on you guys' aid.

I'm planning a build, I have an iMac right now, which is not cutting it for gaming.

This is what I'm planning now:

Mobo: Asus Maximus VII Ranger Z97

Processor: Intel i7 4790k

Cooler: Corsair Hydro H80i + some arctic silver thermal compound

Memory: Corsair Vengeance LP 1600 Mhz 16Gb

GPU: Asus Strix GTX 970

PSU: Corsair RM1000 (Reason will become known below)

Case: Corsair Obsidian 750D

SSD: Samsung 850 Pro 256Gb

HDD: WD 2TB Black Series 3.5"

Monitor: Asus ROG Swift PG278Q 1440p

+ a simple asus DVDRW drive

Reason for 1000 Watt power supply is for SLI, possibly next year, when 970's are cheaper.

My problem is:

Some friends are advising against me taking an Asus ROG swift monitor, and suggesting I'd put that money towards an 980 GTX.

And switching screen to an ASUS PB278QR monitor, which is IPS, and more in line with my current iMac 27" IPS display. Because I won't be playing competitive games or FPSs very much. I'm just wondering if the ROG Swift monitor's colours are that bad compared to it, when doing almost no graphical editing.

I'm asking myself too is the 970 enough to run new games in 1440p on the rog swift, in the time I don't have SLI.

Thanks for helping!

FYI: Suggestions outside of the problem are welcome, ofcourse!

Bram

I would recommend a 1080p 144Hz G-sinc screen and a GTX 980.

The 970 is good for the ROG swift but you wont have much benefit from the 144Hz capability as most games will have about 60/70 FPS.

The 980 will get you much higher frame rates at 1080p so you can really use the 144Hz capability.

Also if you are gaming the i5 4690K will do the same as the i7 4790K or even better.

You don't need the 1000W psu as even with 2 980's you will be good with a 800W psu

Well a 980 with an ROG swift just isn't in the budget at this time, but SLI next year ...

And i really want 1440p, because after the imac i just can't go back, it's so good for mmo's and stuff, addon screen space, etc.

Hello Bramhawk, I suggest updating your post and putting your parts in a list on pcpartpicker.com which will allow people to edit it easier to show you what they think.

I hope this is in your price range. I got rid of the i7 and put in an i5 (You don't need the i7 for gaming), got rid of the 16GB ram kid (8 is plenty for gaming), got rid of the maximus VII ganger (this board is cheaper and has no other drawbacks).
I hope this has made it possible to put in a GTX 980... I also put in the Acer XB270HU as it is a 1440p G-sync IPS 4ms gaming panel. (best one on the marked according to linus)
