Wait a little. Intel new cpu's are coming in a month I think. Might be slightly wrong on the time. Don't wait for AMD.

You might as well wait a little to see if amd can make the massive ipc improvements they are claiming, and see what intel brings to the table. Changing a cpu platform is no simple thing as you will have to replace the motherboard as well, so just wait a little.

and switching mobo is alot of work with 1. everything is mounted on there 2. reinstall alot of paid programs (you need to retreive all the software keys and put them back in)

I would jump on X99, but I don't make use of the extra cores. I also have the "Must Have The Newest" mentality. Actually, now that you mention it, a 5820K isn't that expensive.

x99 is only good for things like content creation as well as gaming. He should get a 4690K

He is not gaining much.

Nope. A 4690k is much better than even a 9590.

Sry not downgrading, but he is not gaining much.

Hyper threading, better single core, less power consumption, more lanes, etc.

4690K doesn't have hyperthreading

Wait until new generation and ignore it, new generation will probably make the old one plunges down a bit for the price. i5, 4690k is a good place to start unless you are into video editing then you might get the benefit of the extra core from i7. if gaming, i7 is overkilled.

If your using a 8350 or something than just wait. They are fine for modern Gaming, the 300+$ switch would be better for a vid card then an Intel CPU

General rule of thumb is to avoid CPUBoss like the plague. They test maybe 1 or 2 games and a bunch of synthetic benchmarks that don't reflect real world performance. CPUBoss is the same site that said a 6350 is equal to an i5 4460... -_-

But you are correct when you say the 4690K is quite a step up, regardless of the source. Especially since the 9590 is just a heavily OC'd 8350. When you go into overclocking the i5 it only loses out in very specific content creation circumstances. But for the cost of second platforms he should look at a larger upgrade, more along the lines of an i7 4770/4790(k).

4770's are a good deal considering that they are a few years old

There's really only one way to answer this: Are you looking to upgrade because you got the "upgrade itch" or because you're actually not able to play the games you want to play?

If it's the first one, I'd probably say wait and see what both Intel and AMD have in store, unless money is no issue what so ever.

If it's the second, then perhaps you should start looking for some good deals on a z97 board + suitably fast CPU.
