Just looking for some input on this situation.

I've got a friend whom I'm giving an old Q6600 to, running on a P9657AA-8KS2H from foxconn. This is the best possible CPU that board can handle.

The motherboard is a bit iffy if I remember correctly from last time I used it (Doesn't save bios information after power loss, yes I tried changing the CMOS battery and other little oddities) but it runs.

Having a quick look on ebay, if the motherboard were to fail, I could get a replacement board for around $60. Replacement boards pretty much all support better Core 2 quads, such that I could then get a Q9300 for $50.

On the other hand, I could get my friend up and running on an I3 for around $310, as new mobo, cpu and ram would all need to be bought.

They're the kind of person that would rather spend little bits of money at a time.

p35 board and a 20 dollar server 771 cpu(not that a q6600 is bad, but they are cheap) with a crossover mod would my my recommendations if it dies tbh.

The Vinyl Decal guy.

Yeah, it is old. But it is free from my friend's point of view.

I can't find any p35 boards in my area, unfortunately. But I didn't know about the xeon mod! That's rather interesting.

And BTW motherboards just don't "die" My Pentium 2 motherboard is still running. That's just an excuse the Indian scammers try to tell you when you have a problem with your computer.
