Hey, our modem's on board wifi keeps dropping so we'd like to replace it. Not too many requirements need to be filled, we simply need a modem and a router.

Please note we live in an apartment so even onboard wifi could suffice, so don't go too over the top :) but a cheap/decent router would be nice to have :P

I was looking at the motorola surfboard for the modem, but not sure what router to get. Thanks!

edit: cheap as possible, but we could spend $100-$150 for something nice :D

The router will be providing the wifi in here. Make sure that you purchase one that is at least 802.11N Wireless (if you want something more fancy that will have better support with newer devices like phones and tablets, you can go for Wireless AC) and can operate in the 5GHz frecuency (Dual Band).

Also, install a spectrum tracking app and see what channels are being used the most. Dodging neighbours' signals is the best way to improve wireless connectivity.

I was looking at getting this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008RV51EE/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER plus this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004XC6GJ0/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

What do you think?

I like those parts a lot actually.

I installed one of those TP-Link N600 routers in my sister's place. Their software, while it worked fine isn't that much featureful, it gets the job done without a hiccup, but I'd have liked more functionality that you get from stuff like Asus and Cisco. If you just want it to blast enough signal and be fairly plug-n-play experience, then it's a good pick :).

With that particular modem I have no experience, but I've mostly used Motorola modems and they never let me down. I'm currently using one of their older Surfboard stuff, and it's a rock; can't complain.

I live in an apartment and could never use wi-fi well because theirs so many conflicting signal, you should just try to use your things with an Ethernet cable.. if you were to get a router make sure it has 5ghz so you could find the best possible wavelength for the least conflictions with your neighbors :P

asus ac56u+ that motorola modem

best setup for you

A little over the top, plus they seem to need only the very basic. Third party firmware is the least of their problems and the budget is MAX $150.

Yes. I think you can even get a combo with this router and a Motorola modem. For your usage, don't spend more than $70 on a router.

Take a look at this one, it's the same price but the 5G is a little faster: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KATWRIY/
