My modem is in the Kitchen and I have a couple desktops in the study. Without using wireless, what device would I need if I wanted to have 1 Ethernet cable running from the kitchen to the study and then diverge to connect into the desktops? I am a little new to how networking works.

Okay, thank you. So do I just plug the Ethernetcable directly from the modem into the switch. No setup required?

No it's plug and play.
