So I'm going to be building my new rig in the coming weeks but I ran into a slight snag. It's going to be a black and white theme but there are two spots that won't match... The ram (crucial ballistix 16gb) is a light blue, and the heatsinks on my Asus z97-A are kinda gold-ish. I have access to tons of 3m vinyl wraps. My question is, would putting vinyl wrap over them (as opposed to disassembling/taping and painting) insulate too much heat?

Yeah, I would not put vinyl wrap on head dissipating components. Those VRM get to like 60c usually since they're passive, and that would only add heat.

Even on the ram? There'd still be the gaps to allow air to flow through. Or what about oven paint? Like what Linus or someone on the channel used?

Krait - piece of shit? Sir, I am offended!

I have that mobo and cant say a single bad word about it

You're right that was insensitive of me... It is by far one of the best looking motherboards available, but I have a higher budget and can afford other solutions with more "bells and whistles" that I'll probably never use.

Well, budget is another thing :P I went with a good price and "bells and whistles" option :) I didn't need a 300€ mobo and at the time the Krait was a newcomer, I bought it a month after release :D heck, check my build log, if you want :P

I know people on the forum have used vinyl wrap on their mobo heatsinks, and from what I know it's not an issue, but they were only covering over part of the heatsink. If you cut the wrap to fit it and leave the airflow paths, it should be okay, it's at least worth an experiment isn't it?

Except that I'd hate to ruin a $170 mobo and $120 kit of ram if it gets too hot and something gives

Test it on some metal at the lowest temperature your oven can go?

For RAM it's not really a problem as long as you can get it to contour well to the shape, as for motherboard heatsinks it will be ok as long as you only cover the gold accent part since that part does a minor amount of cooling whereby the base piece does a lot more on the Z97-A.

I personally did this on my Z97-Pro board with no noticeable temp difference so I didn't worry much:

so with adequate airflow it shouldnt be an issue? I dont plan on overclocking the ram past the 1866 stock clock

Most RAM don't get really hot, but for the motherboard heatsinks there should always be a bit of incidental airflow from a case fan, I have a rad that exhaust out the top so it helps pass a  bit of air over it.

there will be plenty of air passing over it, I like having a lot of fans at low rpm

Why is it bad? I was considering it.

It isnt bad, for a budget build, it is great and is arguably the best looking z97 board for under 200 USD. For an extra 50 bucks though you get an m.2 port, more pci slots, and from what ive heard (my asus Z97-A is still en route) much better control over overclocking features in the bios

can't there be a sticky post in this forum with answered question its like the 50 times somebody ask about spraying heatsinks even linus made a video about it.

a sticky note in this forum and a search for everybody so we don't have to answer every question 15 times.

yes heatsinks can be sprayed what ever you want.

yes it will performe less but only about 2 or 3° celcius

yes it will void your warranty.

1) Im not spraying them, im putting vinyl wrap over it which would if anything insulate it more

2) Some components from some manufacturers might not operate as well under higher temperatures

3) Not every situation will be the same, hence why I stated my specific combo of ram and mobo. No two situations are the same

4) I referenced that video earlier in the topic and asked if my situation was similar, no response

I would put the vinyl on the ram, but not the motherboard.

Ram coolers are usually just glued on, they don't even do anything.

Motherboard coolers (Generally) do things

Specs: 4790k | Asus Z-97 Pro Wifi | MX100 512GB SSD | NZXT H440 Plastidipped Black | Dark Rock 3 CPU Cooler | MSI 290x Lightning | EVGA 850 G2 | 3x Noctua Industrial NF-F12's

Bought a powermac G5, expect a mod log sometime in 2015

Corsair is overrated, and Anime is ruined by the people who watch it
