imo the asus maximus vii formula is my fav, wish it came in black and blue instead of black and red, but ol well.

Though its a bit expensive, and you don't need a z series board if you don't have a k series cpu, so I'll take a look for some h series boards.

If you're talking about a GTX 970, that would work with either motherboard. (The GTX 970 is not a motherboard, it is a graphics card)

If you're not overclocking CPU it doesn't matter. With a 4770 which is non-refresh chip, save your money and go for H81.

You can OC the GPU on a h97 board.

 

If you get an i7 4770 or 4790 then you can't overclock it, you can overclock the i7 4770K and i7 4790K though. (if using a z97 board, or a h97 board that supports overclocking)
