So, I'm planning to add another 280, X99 and a 1000w PSU to my PC.

Thoughts on the X99 part selection?

Go with Z97 and put the savings into getting a better gpu.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

I can get a 280 for £50 (friend upgraded), and I already have one so I thought xfire would be best

You may want to edit the OP to reflect this. Crossfire would definitely be good. A single R9 280, not so much.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.
