Best modem for this router

What is the best type of modem for the ASUS Rt-N56U. I'm not sure what cable or DSL is so I'll say I use comcast. I don't want to spend more than $50

Just buy a used one if you are concerned about price.  Most modems you get from the service provider are used or refurbished anyway.

Is the step-up version.  These are two of the best modems on the market, and most recommended.

Most ISP's will provide one for purchase or monthly rental that is part of your bill. As for Cable and DSL it's just the connection your company provides, cable is basically just coaxial cable and DSL is usually through phone lines, you'll need to check which one Comcast uses.

I thought they "lease" you a modem if you have a 12 month contract with them.

I had a recurring payment plan with them and I was being charged for the modem every month regardless.  I believe if they no longer support the modem/router/cable box that they gave you then they cannot charge you, but by that point your gear is outdated.  You can get a free upgrade, but the payments will begin again.

I guess it depends on your area. Comcast and Charter both give out free modems in my area.

The upfront cost is free, and Comcast will definitely advertise itself as providing a free modem, just make sure you check the detailed bill at the end of the month.  There's a good chance that there is a small modem rental charge somewhere in there.  I don't know about charter since I've never used them.
