Hey guys! I have very little knowledge of GPUs, so I figured here would be the perfect place to ask which one I should buy. I want a GPU that has PERFECT compatibility with Windows 7 Professional as well as Linux (Ubuntu 14.04). In addition to that, I need it to be able to play GTA 5 at 60+ fps as well as Minecraft at much higher framerates. My GPU right now can get 1k+ in a MC world with NOTHING in it when looking at the sky, but when there's a lot of stuff in the world my game gets VERY laggy. I currently have a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 645. My budget is preferably less than 100 USD, but if I can't get something pretty good for that I could probably push it to like 150 or a bit more...

So, which GPU should I buy?

Minecraft isn't optimized for graphics cards.

My old Minecraft system had a AMD 5570 and got 60-70 fps while having a render distance of 16 chunks.

What really helps Minecraft is a good multi core processor and enough ram while running optifine to take advantage of multiple cores and threads.

About the Minecraft: I have an i7 4770 and 16 GB of ram... so... and Optifine makes the game PLAYABLE. If I remove Optifine it goes to like 0 FPS (on Windows, not on Linux. Don't need Optifine on Linux. idk why...)

I could save for a while and go for 200+... but honestly I want the best performance for Minecraft specifically.

I'm sorry, 60 fps is not playable? It's minecraft, not competitive csgo, and yes. I was running hundreds of mods as well

No, I said 60 fps OR not playable. Besides, more importantly than 60 FPS is choppiness... you know what I'm talking about right? when the FPS will be 60 and it will still be REALLY choppy...

That is more important than the framerate.

But yes, I refuse to play on less than 60 FPS. Ever.

1. 60 fps or not playable.

2. hundreds of mods :P

Obviously then it's the mods your system is probably one of the best combos for being optimized for Minecraft so you can.

a. Keep suffering

b. Ditch the mods

c. Spend over a grand to make a new system that might get you another 10% fps.

You really shouldn't be getting any choppiness on your setup. The only struggle I had was having a 32bit system so my ram was limited

I am well aware that I *shouldn't* be getting any... but, I run extreme setups in my Minecraft worlds ..... so... that's a large part of it.

But the thing that really stinks is that my performance is RUINED by Windows... Like I said, I ran without optifine on Linux but whenever I set up a Windows dual boot, I had to install optifine so I could play it on Windows... what's that about?!?

Sounds like an issue not in specs, your specs are more than fine, could be mods not agreeing with each other but I can assure you that your specs are fine.

Well, last I checked my GPU was above the minimum for GTA 5 but below the recommended... so an upgrade would be good, but if avoidable it would be NICE.

As for mod disagreement, I really don't think that's it. It's more likely to be what I'm doing in my game than that...

But I really want to know what the deal with Windows is... is it really just that bad of an OS? Like I said, when I went from Linux to Windows the FPS went from 200+ to 0...

And yes I have the right drivers lol...

Then why not stick to Linux

Also, gpu upgrade at 100 bucks isn't reasonable. 200 is more of a decent price but don't expect an increase in performance in minecraft, I would go with a r9 whatever a 200 dollar price range, and windows runs minecraft fine, I'm really not sure why you aren't getting better performance.

Then why not stick to Linux

The only reasons I had to set up a dual boot with Windows:

 - School (Visual Studio (*pukes*))

 - GTA 5

 - XSplit

Believe me, I HATE Windows, but unfortunately I can not go without it due to developers being idiots...

So 250+ is basically the min for good GPUs? Sheesh... like I said, I'm not knowledgeable about GPUs.

As for the Windows thing, I can show you screenshots of the same game with the same mods on the same world running in Linux vs Windows without optifine if you don't believe me. Windows WRECKS my performance without Optifine. With it the game is SOMETIMES playable.

If you want amazing performance save up and check the local classified ads I did and have 2 gigabyte windforce R9 290X's OC editions (1.04ghz) and only paid 250$ for first and 260$ for the second one.

You can get an r9 280 for around $180.  Check amazon and newegg.

Tomorrow I'm buying a MSI twin frozr R9 280x for 80$ honestly the classifieds are the best place to go just as long as you have the patience to keep looking, also make sure they work and are running before you spend the money.

Oh yea I'm fully aware of buying used items, but some people prefer new and for $180, a 280 is a pretty good deal.  Good work on finding a 280x for $80 though, that's a really good price.
