Hey all, I'm looking at turning an old computer into a simple media server, I'm just not sure what software to use.

What I want is to be able to stream to a PS3 (just been using PS3 media server) but I also want to be able to access all files off of a windows computer, Apple and Android devices. Is there any simple software that can achieve all this? I would rather not use a whole new operating system like FreeNas as it's a bit of a hassle, any help would be appreciated :)

If you have the option to get a high refresh rate monitor, do it.

Main PC CPU: i7 14700k CPU Cooler: NZXT x62 280mm Motherboard: Gigabyte Aorus Elite X WiFi 7 GPU: Asus Strix 3080ti RAM: Gskill Trident Z5 32gb DDR5 SSD: 990 Pro 2TB, 980 Pro 1TB Case: NZXT S340 Black PSU: Corsair RM1000e ATX3.0

Server: CPU: i7 9700k RAM: Corsair 32gb DDR4 HDD: 36tb Usable SSD: Samsung 500gb NVME Case: Fractal Define R5 PSU: Corsair RM1000e ATX3.0

The easiest way is to install FreeNas.

The other way is to use any linux system with wembin addon, it will give u much more flexibility.

Any NAS system setup requires some time to spend on it :)

Don't be scared, it 100% worth it.

The easiest (but also hardest to do on the PS3) way would be to just host things on a local webserver. Then you could simply go to the webpage and stream it if it's in a streamable format.

Or you could set a webserver to the same directory as the PS3 media server...

Sig under construction.

Yeah you can install a dlna server on freenas personally I would use Plex that has a dlna portion to it and will work perfectly. Freenas is good you'll have to install it to a flash drive, personally I would just use something like Ubuntu set up as a Plex server and some simple network shares, as long as you can get access to it with a monitor (or remote desktop) so you can install updates it will be fine.
