Step by step tutorial for setting up a NAS?

Hi,

 

Can someone (preferably someone who has done this before) go through how to set up one using FreeNAS? I reckon using one of these will be useful in my situation. I need someone to tell me what I need to get, how to set up the NAS (I can build PC's) and by set up I mean like making NAS drives in my devices and also set up the NAS itself in terms of OS/Software if needed. 

 

I have an old PC without a hard drive and no RAM either.  (Custom built in 2010. I've used the hard drive in another build now)

 

I'm thinking 3 terabytes should be plenty.

If your planning using less than 8GB of RAM and not using ECC then I personally would go with FreeNAS, use another OS

Under 8GB of RAM dont use freenas, also if you want more features other than just a NAS like a webserver or something i like Fedora or Centos with webmin installed.

usually I recommend a synology NAS for people wanting a NAS

since the OS on them is so nice and easy to setup
