The ssd choice nowadays is fairly simple, as the majority of them are in the same ball park in terms of performance... A nice balance between speed and price might be the 840 evos (in a size that would suite your need)

Since you have a desktop, it should be fairly simple to replace the hard drive, if you have opened it up before, but if you have not, you might want to watch out for any sneaky warranty stickers if you care about having it.

Removing the side panel (usually screws on the back holding it on), should reveal most of the internals of the pc, and you should be able to see where the hard drive is installed.

If you have an extra sata cable, and have extra/ unused sata power cables coming from the PSU, you might be able to use both the ssd as a boot drive, and the hard driver as a storage drive (this can also be done by getting an external drive enclosure, which are fairly cheap, and allow you to plug your old hard drive through usb)

Hey cherry123,

What @WoodenMarker posted is indeed helpful.
For regular consumer usage, most SSDs perform very close to each other and you are not likely to notice differences. I would check reviews, consider how big of a SSD is needed, look at the warranty and get the best deal. :)
