Hey,

I am new to the forum and I am seeking some advice.

I currently am running an Intel Core i5 4690k in my computer. I am looking for an upgrade and I am a bit stuck at choosing a CPU. I will be primarily using the machine to do programming and running vms and then just doing every day task, e.g Browsing the internet and doing emails.

Thanks if anyone can help!

You're looking to upgrade your 4690k?  Wait until skylake, or go crazy with a 5960x (you'd need an x99 socket 2011 board and DDR4 RAM though).  Not sure why you'd need to upgrade that cpu, unless you're solely interested in getting hyperthreading... then grab the 4790k I guess.

Keep in mind that Skylake uses low voltage DDR3 or standard DDR4 so a RAM replacement would probably be needed anyway.

For VMs, I find that having as many threads as possible (and enough RAM) is a necessity. I would suggest either a Xeon E3 1230V3 (or higher), i7 4790 (k) or 5930k/5960x, dependent on your budget (the 5xxx series requires either a C612 or x99 motherboard, and DDR4 RAM, so factor that cost too).

What other real linear upgrades are there that wouldn't require a significant system change?  The 4790k is really the only option I see as feasible, but it doesn't really make sense to me.

welcome to the forum.

ya i'm not sure why you'd really want to upgrade from that cpu. it isn't going to be a HUGE difference going to an i7, certainly not enough to be worth the upgrade cost but you if you really feel the need to go with the 4790k.

I see what you mean, it's just the CPU is not performing that well with vms but I can live with it.

Well I was wondering if there was any CPU that has good hyper-threading that has the 1150 socket but I am really not sure.

Yessir, the 4790k has an unlocked multiplier and also has hyperthreading.  It's single core performance will not be an improvement over what you have now though (or very, very marginally improved).
