I've been putting together a budget computer build for myself for some time now, and I've run into a difficult decision (or at least I think so lol). The two processors I have to decide between is an AMD Athlon X4 860k and an Intel Pentium G3258. The reason I have difficulty choosing between the two is this:

Athlon X4 860k

+ Overclockable quad core

+ Better Passmark rating for less than a $10 difference

- FM2+ socket pretty much restricts me to APUs unless I upgrade the entire mobo

Pentium G3258

+ Larger upgradeability with its LGA1150 socket

Should I concentrate on performance now and upgrade the CPU/mobo together, or sacrifice a couple cores for the sake of upgrading?

Here's the Passmark comparison link: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp[]=2362&cmp[]=2267

Here's the build I have down so far (I have it set to AMD right now for price reasons): http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/user/Lampy314/saved/66xNnQ

I'd like to keep it around that price range, if possible, so around $750 CAD before taxes. Changes to the build are welcome, but I'd prefer to hang on to the case, if possible.

Thanks in advance for your help. :)

I'd get the Pentium. It's overclockable and you can upgrade to an i3/i5/i7 later. Also, why a Wi-fi adapter?

@Lampy

What is the purpose of the build?  Gaming?

Anyways.. you have the budget for an i3, and that is by far the best processor within your budget.

A little over my budget, but definitely something to consider. Keep in mind that I live in Canada, not US, so pricing is gonna be different.

got any parts u can salvage from a old computer

that cuts cost down pretty good

save alot of money if u dont gotta buy a case and hard drives

can put money saved into better processor

No previous computers I can salvage from. I'm upgrading from a laptop, so I'm basically starting all from scratch.

i'd dump the ssd , heat sink, fan , mobo , chip

find a cheaper case

try to find a cheap i5  or i3 if ugotta and mobo with heat sink included

and just upgrade the fans and heatsink later

dont go fm2 lol it wasnt good when it was new

if u get a 50 dollar case and should leave with 300 for mobo and chip

maybe find a combo pack

something like this

http://www.ncix.com/detail/ncix-bundle-deal-asus-b85m-d-ca-107845.htm

not sure if heatsink included with intel chips u might find somethin cheaper i never looked hard

Consider the i3 over the pentium; some games don't run in 2 threads or shutter

This is a CPU chart in GTAV

look how the pentium has minimums of 8-9

AMD 860K @ 4.3GHz ; Kingston HyperX Fury 2400MHz ; Asus A88XM-Plus ; Sapphire R9 270X 2GB ; 600W Tacens Radix VII AG 80+Silver  ; Cooler Master TX3 Evo

I did use Canadian pricing. This is the build you should get. If you have $750 CAD, this is under budget. You won't get a better setup than the one I built for you.
