i was wondering if i put a m.2 card directly into the m.2 slot on my motherboard will i used any pie lanes. Do sound cards use pcie lanes.

That depends. The M.2 slot carries both a SATA signal and a PCIe signal. If you buy a Sata M.2 drive then you will not use up any PCIe lanes. If you buy an PCIe m.2 drive, then you will use up to 4 PCIe lanes.

As for sound cards:

if it is the onboard sound chipset, then no.

If it is an add in style card, and it uses PCIe, then yes it will use 1 PCIe lane.
