The Core i7-5960X would be my bet and also if needed you can overclock it.

I'd have to say the 5960x - it's considerably more powerful. If you require more processing power still you can very easily overclock the 5960x...

You gave the wrong benchmarks, he said "3D Auto CAD " which is GPU heavy, you showed cpu tests on cpu heavy programs.

Do not overclock in a professional environment.

As H4x3r says, Xeon is generally for servers so is more stable and will have some extra options like ECC support and additional instruction sets.

The i7 has unlocked multipliers and is therefore easily overclocked. Not that you should really be overclocking a workstation build for a professional environment.

If your going to compare the 5960k to a Xeon you should compare ves the same gen and core count and speed.. The Xeon you mentioned is a 4core with HT.. The i7 is an 8core with HT

Which one of these CPU's would be better for a PC for 3D Auto CAD work?

(it's for for an architect that is going to is it just at work).

Xeon so you can use ECC memory and the xeon is also significantly cheaper and oyu can invest that into perhaps a faster SSD setup or external server for your projects.

This XEON is a hexa cora, not a quad core, the PC is not for me, it is not going to be overclocked, there are no concerns about budget at all. Why would he need ECC memory?

ECC memory is amazing at preventing corruption.

Sig under construction.

Oops, yep.. but thats still 4 less threads and CAD likes it's threads.

ECC May or may not be useful, you would need to do some research, I was simply pointing out the advantages / disadvantages of each.

From a quick search.. Depending on the set-up and use of auto-cad you want more cores, more ram and fast storage.
