Hard Drive Temperature

Go to solution Solved by ForsakenLive,

What temperatures do the GPU and CPU have to reach before I can confirm that they are bad? I know that when I'm gaming the CPU temps rarely exceed 40 degrees celcius and on idle it runs at about 15C. The GPU runs just a hair under 30C on idle and climbs the ladder to about 70-75C while gaming. (give or take a few degrees) Also what hard drive utility software do you reccomend?

BTW CPU is a AMD FX 6100

GPU is a GTX 650ti SSC 2GB

I use HDDScan (obvious name lol), it's free software and works wonders. The interface and functionality can be a bit tricky, but if you are patient you will get around.

Those seem to be good CPU and GPU temperatures. Max safe temp varies from CPU to CPU (same for GPUs). As long as your CPU is not going near the 65°C mark, and your GPU stays under 85°C you are good to go. Other parts will have different recommended temperatures.

You can use Aida 64 (free version) and MSI Kombustor for CPU and GPU stress testing. (MSI's software works on ALL graphic cards, it doesn't have to be MSI).

Give Memtest86 a try, you only need a USB drive you can use to boot from, and some spare time, as the test take a bit.

Also, update your motherboard's bios to the latest version.

When I'm not playing a game or doing anything, the idle temperature of my hard drive is about 26-27 degrees celcius and it doesnt change when I play a game. I was wondering if that was a stable temperature. I am asking this because I have been dealing with my computer freezing up while I play games and have been trying to figure out the problem for months and a hard drive failure is one of the possibilities. So just wan't to see if my hard drive is causing the issue.

Here is a link to the post where I explain the issue about my PC freezing:

I would very much appreciate feedback, please help if you can!

Do separate (and combined) stress test for the CPU and GPU; check their temperatures while doing so!. Also do a full memtest86 scan and run a hard drive utility to see how's everything going on with the drives.

26-27C is pretty good for a HDD anything <50-60C is safe, once it starts to get to those temps it's usually bad airflow or stacking drives in a large storage array.

Hey TimHenry,

As @ForsakenLive explained, your temperatures are good. What storage drive are you using? I would suggest running a diagnostic tool provided by the manufacturer in order to check the S.M.A.R.T. status of the drive. Feel free to post it here so we can help you out and explain the results.
Also make sure you have all the latest OS updates, drivers and firmware updates of all your parts.
You can also try testing for memory leaks. Here's a link that explains what that is and how to do it: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms859408.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396
Checking Resource Manager to see if any of your parts is hitting 100% and what uses it might also help.

I would be looking towards a psu fault seeing as your temps are ok and it only shuts down when you are gaming. Do you have another psu you could try? or you may be able to get yours tested if you have a friendly pc repair shop nearby. Aida64 will show you psu voltages so you could run that and keep an eye on the different voltages to see if you are having power drops.

I am using a Toshiba DT01ACA100 1TB drive. What program should I use to do a S.M.A.R.T test? I tried HDDScan but it didn't work. I do have all of the latest Windows updates that I know of.

I would check the manufacturer's website of there is one provided by them. If not, there are a number of good third-party ones that could prove pretty useful. You can look around in the threads fro them or simply search for them on the internet. :)
