Hey, I Have a intel core 2 duo e4600 on a lenovo m58 (MTQ45MK Motherboard) and want to upgrade to quad-core. I Was looking at the q6400. Its in my pric erange ($0-$50). Then i looked at it and thought, Well the e4600 is at 65 watts and the q9400 was at 95. Im wandering if it will work on my board because Lenovo doesnt tell the maximum rated TDP of the motherboard. The cpus im looking at are on amazon used so any help would be greatly appriciated. Even a xeon Prosessor would be fine as long as it works with my mobo, Thanks!

It should be fine, I was running a Xeon X5450 (125W TDP) on a motherboard which wasn't designed for high power CPU's and it was just fine.

And a Core 2 Quad is apparently supported: http://support.lenovo.com/en/documents/pd001803

I don't think you can with that motherboard, you'll have to google the motherboard' model with 'bios update' at the end.

It doesn't hurt to try, and it should work being one of the older Core 2 Quads (which were just 2 core 2 duos on 1 chip-Intel got lazy).

OK. Im just worried that it could hurt the motherboard so.  If you know any batter core 2 quads at 95 WATTS and 6mb cache (the mobo wont support one higher) then feel free to let me know. Once again, Thanks So much!

Np, and that's the best as far as I can see, unless you want to risk trying a q6600 or higher? (8MB L2 cache).

nah. Eventually im hopinh to get a board that i can O.C. on anyways. Right now the FSB speed of my cpu is 800mghtz. is the q9400 one compattible? My ram is also at 1066mgtz. Also sorry for the long thread, just want to make sure everything is good  i was thinking a q6600 but it is 8mg cache and 105 watts

I'm not sure about the newer Core 2 Duo's, the older ones are a safer bet with that motherboard. (Lenovo's product page sucks).

Look at the Q6000 range, they are older and more likely to work than the newer Q9000 series. And looking at your motherboard's specs again, a 800MHz FSB might be the highest it supports.

well lenovo says "Supports Intel Core™ 2 Duo™ processor with 2MB, 3MB, 4MB or 6MB L2 cache" So im just gonna try the 9400. i dont like trying 105 watts so.

Good luck then, if it doesn't work, then you'll need to save it for a new motherboard.
