HDD Recommendations?

Go to solution Solved by Enderman,

barracuda

they are almost as fast as WD blacks but are half the price

Just wondering what HDD I should buy that you guys recommend and what would be the best to use. I have a 480gb SSD for main boot and certain games, and a 500gb seagate Barracuda HDD for Storage. But I'm wanting to add another HDD to it as more storage. and I have no idea what kind of HDD would be good that I could add. I was kind of thinking of a Hybrid drive or should I just get another Barracuda?

Get another Barracuda or a WD Black. Both are pretty fast. I looked into Hybrid drives when building my PC but with the SSD bit being so small I just decided on a regular HDD.

I'm a fucking AMD kawaii weeaboo desu I have seen the light

Hey Relicke,

What are you going to use the drive for? Since you already have a pretty big SSD and a performance drive, I would guess that you need a larger storage drive for simple files and backups. I could also suggest checking out WD Green drives as they are designed for secondary storage and would run cooler and much more quiet compared to performance drive as well as they save energy. Here's a link if you decide to check them out: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=dhCVMh

Yea, it would be used for storage and some games, I was doing some more reading and was starting to think about WD Black.

Games rely on storage only for their loading times and if you don't mind waiting a bit longer, pretty much any drive would do the job. On the other hand, WD Black is a great and fast drive that can sustain longer workloads, harsher environments and has a long warranty. It would be a good choice. :)

Personally, I think WD Blacks are overpriced (and apparently too loud). IMHO they're not really worth the price premium (especially not when used as secondary drive next to an SSD). But do as you like.

So out of them all, since I will be putting games on it, would I want the black cause it will be opening games?

As I pointed out above, games rely on storage only for their loading times. FPS and graphics are not affected at all from the drive's speed. The games will load as fast as the drive works. The better performance of the drive, the faster they will load. This is why people prefer having a SSD for their more demanding games and leave everything else on the HDD. Out of WD's consumer line of drives, WD Black is the one designed for performance. I would say WD Blue is the one that is more appropriate for combining with a SSD as you would already have a fast drive for quick loading times, but WD Blue drives are limited to 1TB and if you need larger capacities, you would have to go with WD Black. WD Green is designed for secondary storage and might be a bit slow for holding more demanding games. WD Red is a NAS/RAID class drive that would work, but still load slower compared to the Black and WD Blue and you would waste the NAS/RAID features that the drive comes with. WD Purple is a surveillance-class drive that is optimized for intensive 24/7 writing and wouldn't be appropriate.
In other words, for storing and loading games, if 1TB is enough for you, you can go with WD Blue without suffering any major losses on speed. If you need larger than 1TB capacities - I would recommend the WD Black. :)
