Hi

All usb ports except for the 2 top ones(back IO of the motherbaord) on my friends computer aren't working and I can't figger out why not.

He uses the MSI H55-GD65 motherboard.

I already tried the following things:

Update the motherboard to the latest bios version (v1.6)

Install the latest chipset drivers

I should also note my friend already tried to fix this problem by posting a topic on this forum but he gave up on finding a solution: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/296588-msi-h55-gd-65-usb-port-problem/

Edit: I forgot to mention the usb ports don't work when the computer is in the bios

In the following picture you can see the usb section of device manager.

Hopefully one of you can guide me to the right solution

If it's motherboard related in your computer, Try fiddling around and making sure the Big ol' USB 3.0 Cable hasn't moved out of place. Could be that it's come loose. Or check some power supply cables and just go over every cable to make sure everything is secure.

usb ports can die...they are probably dead...nothing you can do other then get a new board

this happens when devices are plugged in that are outta spec and draw more power then they should be

or are just cheap chinese junk and shorts out the port

If you need remote help fixing something on your computer

I can help over Teamviewer if you wish

just msg me on my profile

Go in to your BIOS, find "USB configuration" or settings, or something like that (my board is - Advanced > USB Configuration > Single USB configuration, and then I can control all the USB ports). Maybe you will find some disabled ports. If so - enable them. My mate had a problem with a cheapo ASRock H81 board on the first day of buying his pc, when the USB ports wouldn't work at all in BIOS or when booted from DVD

Everything is connected properly so I don't think this is the problem.

I think this is the problem, especially because the ports don't work in the bios as well

Every USB option is selected as far as I see

Boot to a live CD and see if the ports work; Or even better, Some BIOS' have a screenshot function where it can save a picture to a thumb drive. Start from the top and move down, plug a thumb drive in, take a screenshot, save it to the thumb drive, move on to the next port.
If you can save a picture to the thumb drive on every single port, it's a driver issue. If you can't, it may be hardware/firmware.
