hello fellow PC gamers,

i have a little problem with my GPU not performing like it should.

like you can see in my ATTACHED images you see in the maximum settings high GPU usage and high CPU usage.

but on lower settings you only see high CPU usage and low GPU usage. also the FPS aren't that much higher.

so my question is: is my CPU bottlenecking my GPU?

if so: can i solve this without buying a new CPU (and motherboard)

if not: wtf is the problem?

hope you guys have enough information if not ask me to give it :)

thx for reading this hope you can help me :)

PS: its all run at 1080p in GTA 5

my system:

gigabite G1 GTX 970

intel core i5-3350p

kingston v300 120gb ssd

random 500gb hard drive :P

corsair RM 850 PSU

motherboard: ASrock p67 pro3

an random internet card (the one on my motherboard is shit, like the board :P )

first of all thx for the fast replies lol

@zerge i can't because its a P series thats not overclockeble i tried it shut downs my pc without even giving it much.

@power2025 a i7-4790k is way out my price range, i was thinking about 200-300 euro's or maybe buy a 2nd handed because im studying and i seriously don't want to spent 300-400 euro on CPU alone or even with motherboard....

that i5 could be an option though (u sure that can handle the 970)

idk i ain't so much of a fan of AMD but are the CPU's at the price range of 200-300 euro better at handling a 970?

i still have my gtx 650ti boost laying around you think i get better FPS when i put that card in or is that just a stupid thought by me?

Depends, I use a combination of R9 280 and AMD FX-8350 in my rig and it does work perfectly fine in GTA V (however, I think my GPU is bottlenecking it a little bit).

i searched a little and indeed the i5-4690k seems to be the best fitted (bang for buck) CPU in combination with the 970.

and if im lookign for and motherboard it says like ddr3 2666/2400 can it run my slow corsair 1333 ram?

Every CPU with PCIe can "handle" the GTX 970, it depends on the application / game if the cpu is holding you back or not.

You can just put like a i7-3770 on your mainboard and you should be fine in GTAV. My i7-3770K peaks at around 80% CPU usage and averages around 65%. (with programms running in the background)

You should be able to find used ones if you are willing to take the risk to not have warrenty. And because its not unlocked, you can be quite sure, that the CPU wasnt overclocked.

Wouldn't make sense to buy a K on a P67 anyways. You might need a BIOS update though. (at least version P3.10 fo the AsRock P67 Pro3)

Also you might want to upgrade to 8GB RAM.

yea i was thinking if i upgrade CPU why not motherboard too since 1155 is already dead :P but idk how long the 1150 will be the main socket.

also i have 8 gb of ram :P

and that CPU is like 400 euro's if that already is maxing it at 80% then a 250 euro i5 sounds more tempting even when buying a new motherboard

okay guys i think i decided,

i choose the i5-4690K

with that i would like a red-black motherboard with 2 or more pci-e 16x slots. i already found some:

MSI B85-G43 gaming (95 euro)

MSI z97 gaming 5 (150 euro)

ASUS maximus VII ranger (170 euro)

is the first MSI a nice board because its quite cheaper?

if i would do this i would run my 970 and 650ti boost in it NOT SLI just 650 on my second screen.

wil this make much of a diverence or should i sell my old motherboard, CPU, PSU and GPU to a friend?

thx for all the help so far really apreciate it :)

I found i7-3770 used for 160 to 200 euros, that would be a upgrade thats reasonable.

From RAW performance, the i7-3770 is fater then the i5-4690K on stock clock.

The CPU isn't bad GTA V is just a really demanding game.

And keep in mind, i didn't close any programms and thats the total usage, not the usage of only GTA V.

That is a clear example of bottlenecking.

Your CPU isn't optimized to roll with your beastly GPU.

So when you are playing a game your CPU says to your GPU "Hey can you slow it down a little? i'm struggling to keep up with you."

So thats why you're getting poopy performance from your system when running games like this, I suggest you upgrade your CPU to get better performance from your 970.

i just found a deal for 450 euro's

i5-4690k

MSI z97 gaming 6

8gb crucial ddr3 1600ghz ram

this would mean i have a almost whole system to sell new prize 520 euro's

if i sell it for 300 that would mean an upgrade of only 150 euro's.

i dunno but that sounds good.

That's rather expensive for a i5 combo, I would advise you to import a motherboard, CPU and ram from like some other EU country as that would probably be cheaper.

That should be a better deal in general, and the shipping costs are relatively low at that site too.
