Good soundcards for Linux?

Go to solution Solved by Skanic,

Here is a good one  its from ASUS the ASUS Xonar D1

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829132007

And a quote from someone who says it works great under linux its around 99.90$

edit: Also linux works great with my soundcard too, i have a xonar essence stx and it worked great under linux.

Hey guys!

I juste made an account and have seen some videos from Linus about sound cards and I always thought that my headset wasn't getting a good signal (+ static noise on mic)

So... I decided that I want a sound card, but there is a small issue: I use Linux.

Basicly I just want to know if there is someone that could recommend me a card model that works well under Linux, whitout having to tweak the drivers for centuries.

I use that computer for a lot of gaming, but I also listen to a good amount of music.

I want something decent... I don't need quantum technology with gold wires cooled with liquid helium and unobtanium components.

my budget is around 100$

Thanks!

PS: No trolling please.

fiio e10, I wouldn't want to mess with a sound card and stupid drivers again. Linux or windows.

Will work for electronic components and parts

I would definitely be using a DAC (like the e10) if I was running Linux full time. Well actually I would, and do, use a DAC regardless. Screw drivers.

Hmm, I never used a usb sound card, I always though it toi be cheap. I wonder if it would give enough power to 50mm drivers...

Is there one with a microphone jack? *starts googling*

Nothing for microphone. You would expect the same alternative (USB microphone).

You guys are amazing x_x fast replies, I'll definitely stay here, thanks a lot.

Skanic, your xonar essence stx, you had to tweak with something or was it autodetected?

EDIT: sorry for double-posting

I didn't had to do anything running lts ubuntu or linux mint lts , all automatic, it even activated my Bluetooth which i could use to let it play music from my android phone and back.

The only thing i had to do was install the amd drivers for linux.

I don't do any recording so I'm not too concerned about mic quality.(I care, but not enough too go buy a nice ADC)

I just use onboard mic in, and the dac for output.

Will work for electronic components and parts

The only one I know of is the Creative X-Fi HD USB, it's about $80. That's a 6.35mm mic input so if you run a 3.5mm mic then you'll just need a cheap adapter.

I did some research on the Xonar D1 and essence stx...
(It is so much easier to research a particular card than using ALSA lists...)

Anyways, I found out that it seems like the D1's chipset is fully supported.

edit: I'll also keep an eye on USB DACs, interesting stuff.

PS: I'm new here, should I mark it solved?... or wait until I get my card and test it?

Again, thanks a lot!

EDIT: Wait, will the Xonar D1 amplify it enough for 32 Ohms @ 1kHz impedance?
EDIT: It will provide 100ohms... got my answer.
EDIT: ordered, getting it next week, will update after testing it.

The Xonar drivers are actually BETTER in linux than they are in windows.  You can even control the DAC's high end rolloff in alsamixer.

That being said, the usb audio devices also work just great.

"Pardon my French but this is just about the most ignorant blanket statement I've ever read. And though this is the internet, I'm not even exaggerating."

I never knew this but this is good to know. I'm seriously hoping to switch to Linux and not have to use Windows as much.

Ubuntu. don't hate i love it

Eh. I used to use Ubuntu back in 2005/2006. I prefer Arch or Gentoo at this time because I am somewhat familiar with Linux. I'm actually reading up so I can pass the Comptia Linux+ exams.

Update!

I just recieved the Asus Xonar D1 and installed it!

The sound quality is astonishing! (Always used integrated audio before)

On mint, it works whitout any config, but it is quiet because of the alsa settings, boost it in alsamixer once, and it stays good.

The mic was muted, but again, you just have to jump into alsamixer to unmute it.

The mic gives a crystal clear sound, unlike the integrated audio, which makes my buddies on skype happy.

TLDR; It works autodetected! May require to adjust settings in alsamixer. (at least under mint)

Thanks guys!
