and holy apple. Those might actually sell. I know console boxes sell for a bit. a xbox one box just sold literally right now for 71$. for a empty box. so your apple boxes might legitmently sell

I would actually buy all of those. Except the apple ones because I have lots of those. Buy I love the smell and texture of expensive product boxes. I am actually thinking of going to school to engineer boxes for products.

Nobody claimed it was. However spacing, the folds, the durability how you fold the cardboard, does require a bit of math and a bit of work.

 

Consider the classic balsa wood project. You get 100 balsa wood sticks and are told to make a bridge. A bucket is then hung off of your bridge to test the durability. You continue to add weight until it collapses. Balsa wood is weak as shit, but due to weight distribution the bridge can end up holding a good but. 

 

The same can be said for using weak materials to make something durable, or to secure something properly.

 

Anyways anybody who has ever bought a logitech product, sennheiser product, or steelseries product knows that there is a good bit of work that goes into the boxes.

There is much more than a box. If everything was JUST a box they would all be grey equal boxes. But to catch someones attention or make them feel like they have spent there money well you need quality cardboard, soft touch coating, glossy accents, maybe a magnet door somewhere, and bright colorful pictures and graphics. Takes awhile to make a perfect box a company is looking for. Youtube it.

Oh I absolutely agree, outer-box designs are very important. That was never under question. I was referring to you underestimating the work that goes into internal boxing design.

Yes, but surely after a while you will have mastered most boxing techniques.

There is the GPU boxing design I see for AMD cards, basically a cutout for the GPU in black foam and then under the cardboard there is the manuals etc.

The Sennheiser one is.... Meh... I have a box of the HD 558, I think it was the standard mold in plastic. But it does have a 'door' on the packaging with a magnet which I guess is nice, it closes itself.

If you mean then yeah sure, but surely it is an aspect of some occupation and not a job on it's own?

Depends on how large the company is. Super-massive companies will have a team dedicated to that.

 

This includes determining the pricing for the box, like with AMD's 9590 they talked about doing a super-fancy box, but did some math and decided against it.

(they did that with FX processors for a little while)

A box is a box.

Used for storage, rectangular.

Don't think there is much more to gain there.

Now if you said design for on the boxes, the prints, there is some work for that.

 

A lot of work actually goes into product packaging. At the company I work for we had a big problem with receiving a shipment counterfit boxes. I didn't even know that was a thing until then. But you could tell pretty easily. They were the right dimensions and right thickness, but they were total garbage and didn't hold up.
