I was looking around trying to figure out which will give a better gaming experience and couldn't really find a straight answer.

There's a lot of "You should always play at native resolution." type comments, and I get that so I'm modifying the criteria slightly from what I've seen so far.

 

Assuming I have in front of me a 5k monitor that I can play a game on at native resolution on lowish settings with my hardware and next to it a 1080p monitor that I can max the settings out on, which one would ultimately look better?

 

I don't actually have the capability of making this comparison right now but might be faced with the choice in the not so distant future, so I was wondering if any of you fine people have any insight into this issue.

You should  try to get a resolution that kinda fits your native res. 1440p is 4 times as small as 5K, so fits in your monitor without weird stretching.

Try doing that and keeping settings at around medium-high with 45+ fps.

It's not a straight 1:1 difference though. At 1080 you need MSAA or equivalent... at 5k you wouldn't, so you can allocate those resources to other settings.

 

Native resolution, regardless of settings comes first in my book.

It would be good to know what computer components you actually have ..

But I would say play on native resolution if you can.

Well those "resources" are still being hogged by the amount of pixels being rendered.

I think it boils down to personal preference. I for one enjoy gaming at 5760x1080p at high/medium. GTA V is beautiful.

Ketchup is better than mustard.

GUI is better than Command Line Interface.

Dubs are better than subs

Appreciate all the responses so far... but, lol, there's an awful lot of play at native resolution...  

It seems like I'm not good at being clear about what I'm asking for some reason :P

 

I'm saying, using completely different monitors and playing always at native resolution, would you be better off at higher resolution (native) with lower settings or lower resolution (still native!) with higher settings.

The actual hardware is irrelevant (I mean of course it's relevant, but to this specific question it isn't as this is a hypothetical)

 

You could imagine I guess a situation where you want to run 3x monitors on any available graphics card.  Even with 3x 980s in SLI you are going to have a hard time running games at 60 fps on high settings using 4k+ monitors, so you can choose either run at low settings to maintain a decent frame rate on those 3 monitors or use 1080p monitors instead and max your settings out still giving you good frame rates.

 

The above is just an example but this is the sort of thing I'm talking about, assuming you can pick new hardware (monitors) based on what will work the best, which one is better?
