I am having problems with my brother using Netfilx too much, we have 275 GB a month for whichI pay 75% because I wanted faster speeds and more data. He is now using more than me and my parents are holding me responsible for any over charges. I have now had to pay about $35 in over charges, I have acces to the router, is there anything I can do to prevent him from using too much data? Or tracking his so he will have to pay not me. I would ideally like to limit him and track his usage as well.   He has been doing this on the family plan as well. Getting quite annoying, parents took his phone away for it but only for a week so if you have ideas to stop that as well that would be great.

You could track yourself.

Windows 8.1 keeps count of how much data you use. (IF CONNECTING VIA WIFI)

Maybe set the Qos in the router for Netflix to low? That way his Netflix stream will not get any priority.

He will experience more hickups/ bufferings etc and maybe stop his "addiction" to Netflix.

This does limit you and parents too, unfortunately.

That time I saved Linus' WiFi pass from appearing on YouTube:

We have a solid connection (can play 2 4k youtube videos at once) so I doubt Qos wll work. Also I am not connected via wifi as I don't own a laptop and do pull files from the storage server regularly. If it did just limit Netflix it would not impact anyone but him as me and my father (only one who can use a PC well) would just run a script to change it to open for us when we want it. Thanks for the ideas though.

How are you all connected to the router? Ethernet everywhere or does he use wifi?

Looking into some freeware. Give me 2 mins

We all use ethernet other than his xbox where he uses Netflix, other than that my dad uses his laptop on the wifi also phones.

So in theory, all wifi-traffic is his Netflixing and games?

And only windows clients in the house?

Best thing I could find to monitor YOUR usage :http://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-track-your-broadband-data-usage-on-pc-or-mac/

Or this :http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/43561/ask-how-to-geek-how-can-i-monitor-my-bandwidth-usage/

Then simply subtract your usage from your monthly bandwidth and present to parents.

Somewhat, my father is the only other one who depends on the wifi, but him and me use the 5ghz while my mother and brother use 2.4 so yeah almost all 2.4ghz wifi is his netflix, he does not game at all other than maybe NHL one a season.

What I'd do is somehow set up a computer as the 'router computer' which all traffic to the internet must go to, and somehow limit/control things through that. I think that this is the most difficult option, but also the most adaptable.

Sig under construction.

I am limited in what my father will allow and he won't accept that. We already have too many PCs

275GB is alot

but for your needs (or rather whole family) it's definitely not enough

I rather have family discussion and talk about your brother behavior (oh yes, I've been there with dial-up connection)

if you never act, then... it doesn't matter what you do, either way, you will break the cap.

or take extreme measure, apply your own connection, get cheaper package (either with slower speed or lower cap) and says you will not pay and responsible for connection your family have.

Problem is no company will allow me to have a second conection, at my house. That is why I upgraded the family one and pay most of the bill. I use about 150GB a month most months. I don't mind them going over 25% or using up some of the speed but going over and then charging me for his fuck up no thanks. Trust me and I say a family talk is not a good idea in my situation, it has often resulted in me paying more and my brother paying less. Example for our phones my dad put us all on a family plan a year and a half ago, I got nothing extra out of it other than voice mail which I have yet to set up. It costed me $5 a month more, I complained and now am paying $10 a month more. My brother was to pay $2 extra and he got data which I was already paying a good amount for. He stopped paying the extra in two months. So I have a feeling if I complain to my mother I will be paying more and since she is the one who collects and makes sure bills are paid she will ensure I pay more. Thanks for the ieda though.
