mac Safari Pop-up Scam

My brother's mac has an issue.  I don't know if it's a virus, or malware but here is what happens.  Everything wiill be fine, he will be using safari then when a new page opens, any random page causes this, something will pop up saying he has a virus and to call a phone number, then he will get a popup that he can't close without force quitting safari.  what should i do to fix it.

I can help with programming and hardware.

You can download a free Antivirus for Mac, but most likely it's just some adware. Bitdefender has their "Adware Removal Tool for Mac" which targets VERY specific, yet prolific Mac adware. I use the tool at work and it works great. Give it a shot. http://www.bitdefender.com/solutions/adware-removal-tool.html
