Hey guys,

Was wondering if anyone has any things lying around that contain Nixie tubes. They've become a new fascination of mine, its like they hypnotize me every time I see them :P

I was thinking of getting a Nixie clock at some point to start a collection! The large tubes look especially beautiful but even the tiny little front facing ones are just wonderful. For anyone who hasn't seen one before they look like this:

They usually display the digits 0-9 and some have decimal places too. They're becoming pretty popular again nowadays despite ceasing production quite a long time ago. Seems that everywhere I look I see something that has a Nixie tube in it!

Shame they're so damned expensive for anything taller than an inch :(

Usually I'd be straight on eBay but for something like these tubes I'm a little wary of receiving duds. I guess I'd just have to find a reputable seller who performs checks on the tubes they sell. Also, funny you posted that video! I'm subscribed to Tested but that didn't show up in my inbox. Thanks Youtube...

I have a nixie tube clock from coldwarcreations

Sorry its not my own pic but I am travelling on business so can't take any for a couple of weeks. I'll check my potato to see if there are any pics of it on there to post up.

I do absolutely love it though and the quality is fantastic. I am a big fan of an anime called Steins;Gate and a nixie tube device (specifically a divergence meter) appears in that - which is what triggered my desire to own something that used them.

Yup, the prices are pretty extortionate. They are collectors items though I guess. They'll only continue to rise in price as the number of working tubes slowly drops! I think the lowest price I've seen for a full PCB with 6 tubes included is about £120.

The case on it is very high quality. If you expect it to be made out of plastic you'd be mistaken. The crazy guy that made it used glass and cut/sanded it himself.

  • 5 weeks later...

I am building my own from scratch I will make a build log if you guys want. Altogether it cost me maybe 60-75$.

I'd love to see this. Are you going just for a clock or have any plans for something a bit different?

I'll make a post with the construction of it in the next month or so. Need to find my soldering iron and all the other stuff to assemble it. Should be a fun project!

they come in sets of 6 so even if you get a dud you still can make a clock with out the seconds(mine came on some pcb so it took me like 30 min to desolder just a waning)
