I have a Pentium G3258 and a GTX 980 (yeah, I know, stupid match up), and was wondering if the upgrade to the i5 4690k or even the i7 4790k is worth it for a system used primarily for gaming. I am currently running my CPU clocked at 4.5 Ghz and I am worried I am bottlenecking my card. Thanks in advance for your opinions  :)

Holy cow that's worse than my i3 3220 and 770 combo! D:

All you need for gaming is a i5. So buy the i5 and get yourself a fancy cooler or RAM Or something.

that is, so FAR beyond a good upgrade. You should have never gotten a g32 and 980 xD, you'd have gotten much better performance with a 970 and 4690K

So yes, please for the love of god do it.

Thanks heaps :)

A 4590 would be enough. You don't NEED the 4690K overclocked. It is nice, but there will be almost no performance gain for you.

So basically the premium for the k CPU and cooler will give you no real return.....I mean I have a k CPU and a big cooler and I love it, I just want you to know how much that will be worth at the moment.

I originally got the 980 a while ago as I knew I wanted to build a new system in the future. But by the time I got around to building a new system I realised that I diddent have enough at the time to get a decent CPU to go with it. So I settled for the G3258 while I saved up enough for an upgrade.

oh god... the horror... Like me having to use an 8800gts with my 4790K for few weeks. Those were dark times...

A 4690k is all you need but if you want to get a bit more performance for about $100~ then go for it.

CPU: Intel i7-4790K @ 4.7GHz --- RAM: Lenovo 1600MHz 16GB --- MOBO: Gigabyte Z97-G7 --- GPU: EVGA GTX 970 FTW ACX 2.0+--- PSU: Corsair CX600 --- Case: Corsair Air 540 --- Cooler: NZXT Kraken X61 --- OS: Windows 8.1 --- Monitor: 24" AOC G2460P + Dell 19" --- Mouse: Logitech MX Perfromance --- Keyboard: Corsair K70 (Cherry MX Brown) --- Audio: Sennheiser HD558

Don't buy a GTX 980, it's overpriced! Buy 2 GTX 970s or 2 R9 290s intstead (the R9 290s would even be cheaper)
