network switch speeds
I have a Linksys se1500 network switch. Supposedly the speed is 10/100? What does 10/100 mean? How do I tell what these numbers are trying to tell me?
10/100 means it supports both 10 Megabits per second & 100 Megabits per second speeds.
100 Megabits is 12.5 Megabytes per second. Pretty much all modern Ethernet ports will at least support 100 Mb/s, unless there's no need for faster than 10 Mb/s.
Most Routers & Switches these days support Gigabit which is 1000 Megabits per second. These are either just called Gigabit routers/switches or 10/100/1000.
Ethernet is 10 Megabits per second, Fast Ethernet is 100 Megabits per second, and Gigabit is 1000 Megabits per second. Those are just marketing terms like HD (720p), True/Full HD (1080p),and Ultra HD (4K) for TVs.
