No, 4GB. Only 970 uses 3.5GB..... I don't know where the 0.5GB is.....

the 970 has the full 4gb of vram, however the last 500mb is significantly slower, due to the way its connected to the core

Ok then, because my friend also told me about his experience using GTX 970.

Ok then, because my friend also told me about his experience using GTX 970.

The problem is that nvidia spent money putting the last 500mb of vram on the card, however as it is so much slower than the rest of the vram, in certain cases (usually with people that have fast system ram, like 2133 mhz), the OS will put any extra textures on the system ram, rather than the on board last .5gb of vram.

As you can expect putting textures on ram is not a very good solution considering how much slower it is than the vram on the gpu (vram can have transfer rates upwards of 200 GB/s, compared to the 10's of GB/s that system memory can manage)

the reason the 970 has the memory issues is that it is a 980 core with some components disabled. there are 8 doodads that communicate with the RAM on a 980, one of these is disabled on the 970, as such the 512mb of ram that it normally handles has to rely on the other 7 doodads to work. this is slow, and bad...

the 970 is gimped. not intentionally but because chip yields on the 980 are just not high enough that erryone can have a 980. plebs gonna pleb

This method has been used for years, the 290 is a gimped 290x for example... its just AMD didn't gimp the memory doodads

Does the 980 have the same memory issues as the 970? A few benchmarks I ran said 3.5 memory on my evga gtx 980.

No. 980 has full use 4GBs of vram.
