Media Server?

Go to solution Solved by TakeiT,

The CPU doesn't seem to be hot, it has new thermal paste on an intel stock cooler.  There is no speaker so there are no error/beep codes, it seems to post properly, just shuts itself off.  I had swapped the psu back and same problem

I'm using an old computer with windows server as basically a plex server (With a few other small things too)

Last week I couldn't log in via remote desktop, nor would any display show on a monitor.  I tried changing the power supply, pulling all hard drives/ram/anything in the io, clearing the cmos etc.  Anyhow, I pulled it apart today, and with the cpu cooler off, powered it up.  After about 15 seconds, the cpu was so hot it burned my finger upon touching it, and about 10 seconds later the system shut off (i'm assuming due to the heat), though there is no burning smell off of it

So basically, the cpu is fried.  It's an old lga775 socket, and the same cpu is $8 with $15 shipping from intel on amazon.  Now, the other thing is, the shipping is about 2-3 weeks.  Is it worth the $23 dollars to replace the cpu? Or should I get a new system/build a new server?  If so, what can I get away with?  I'm just worried that i'll replace this and something like the motherboard decides to quit.  What do you guys think?

Thanks for the input, but I don't care about the case, it's in a cabinet in my basement.  I'm looking to spend as little money as possible on this, so a $130 case is for sure out of the picture.  The old power supply is still good, its 450w, I also have a new(ish) thermaltake supply.  Also have a new hard drive I put in this media box about 3 weeks ago and 4gb of ddr3 ram laying around somewhere, so it's really down to new pentium4/core duo or new cpu/motherboard

But again, what do I need a quad core, WD reds etc for?

I just have a few movies on an external hard drive, the system I have does the job no problem, but it it worth the risk to spend $30 on a cpu, with a chance of the motherboard failing in a few months?

it seems unlikely

unless you do something to cause it to die on you

and it really is only 30$

you can spend more then that at mcdicks

True, the only time i've ever seen a motherboard fail was because people don't understand what surge protectors are.  But at the same time, it's got 2gb of ddr2 ram, some asus motherboard, the system was manufactured in 2006, however it does have sata ports/hdd, so it's pretty out dated

I dug through my pile of crap and found a cpu (actually the same cpu)..I put it in, and it fired right up, however it's only running for about 30 seconds then it shuts itself off, cleared cmos etc again no difference, but I can get as far as the windows boot screen
