how do I use URL Forwarding

Jaybird

I have a home server and i run owncloud on it. I have a domain that I would like to use to navigate to my server. I have a wonderful ISP that gives me a dynamic Ip address and also blocks port 80. For the Dynamic DNS I use cheapnames's freeDNS to handles the dynamics. but as it currently sits I have to have the url as domain.com:82. I choose port 82 cause i wanted to. so my pfsense router port forwards port 82 to port 80. Now I do not know much about the internet outside of my house so I need some help setting up what I believe is URL forwarding such that when I enter domain.com it automagicly navigates to port 82 instead of port 80 but also does not show that its redirected to port 82 in the url bar.

Using No-IP can help with your Dynamic IP problem and they allow Port 80 Redirect. So you can have it auto-redirect to port 82 :)

yup. ive already have read that. but if you look at the spoiler ive done that but it does not work.

ok ive gotten a different result. usualy just tells me page is not available. this time it looks like I am getting feed back from my router about DNS rebinding. not sure what that is exactly.

mind you I cannot access it from my network using the domain name. so i check via my phone.

Have you tried replacing the URL Direct with your Public IP instead of redirecting to an undefined domain...

the problem is your port 80 being blocked.

Here is the only solution I can think of:

Find a hosting service (the cheapest possible), and set up a server for the sole purpose of redirecting port 80 to port 82 of  your home server. You can even setup some IP update mechanism to handle your dynamic IP (i.e. have your home server periodically update the redirect IP on the redirect server)

You're doing it wrong, but it won't work anyway. No browser implements SRV record lookups.

Ask how they can unblock it, even if it means buying a static IP.

Namecheap does not seem to have a way to Port 80 Redirect. If this is that important to you I would checkout No-IP since they are free (With certain domain endings), handle dynamic IP's very well and allow Port 80 Redirect.

PS: No-IP also allows you to transfer your own domains so you can possibly use the one you already own.

I was under the acquisition that no-ip only allowed free if you use their extensions. I guess ill have to look into no ip then.

ps could you delete the picture of my public ip from your reply. thanks.

To get a free domain from them you have to use their extensions but you can transfer you existing domain to them and use their basic DNS service for free IIRC.

PS: I removed the picture :)
