Hard Drive Help

Go to solution Solved by WoodenMarker,

Update:

I tried what "WoodenMarker" suggested, but encountered a problem. On the SSD is a folder called "Program Files" and "Program Files(x86)". These folders properties cannot be moved to the storage hard drive, which is what I want to move (the applications I've downloaded such as Steam, Chrome, Skype, etc.) Any help?

*Side note- Thanks everyone for helping out, I know it must be frustrating to be helping someone as new as myself.

You shouldn't be moving those folders. Applications should stay on your ssd.

One last question, is there any way to move over the applications I've already downloaded or is this just for future downloads? Thanks for the help.

Install programs on your hdd if that's where you want them.

Recently, I purchased a gaming PC from CyberPower PC. I had to come with WIndows 8.1 pre-installed, as we as two hard drives- a 120 GB SSD for the OS, and a 1TB regular hard drive for everything else. How could I put the OS on the SSD and everything else on the regular hard drive? Right now everthing I download goes directly to the SSD.

Thanks in advance!

You can change the default Libraries folder locations by creating a folder for each (music, images, video, and documents respectively) on the storage drive, then navigating to any of the four sub-libraries from the Libraries window. At the top of the window, there will read something like "Includes: 1 Location". Select "1 Location", remove the OS-created folder, and add the folder you just created. You will do this 4 times (once for each of the sub-libraries).

If you want to install software to the storage drive as well, I suggest planting a Programs folder on the storage drive and install software to that folder. This is a very good idea for large programs and games. Remember that you will have to navigate to this new Programs folder manually when installing software, or else it will install to the C: drive

On Windows 8.1, where could I do this?

*Sorry for the trouble, the is my first Windows-operated machine.*

From your Downloads folder properties, change the Location to a folder on the hdd.

The same can be done with other Libraries like your Pictures, Documents, etc.

Still having trouble (sorry). Since I just got this computer, I only have a few things on it (some programs I downloaded) and no pictures, videos, or music. How would I move those programs from the OS drive to the storage drive? Also could I somehow set the storage drive as the main drive so everything could be put there instead of the OS drive?

Thanks.

Whenever you install a program, it usually asks you where you want to install, the default is the C drive, change to the HDD, maybe D drive, this option will come pretty early in the install process. In your browser settings, change the default downloads, Chrome for example, under advanced settings, has a setting called Download Location. Don't try to move the Program Files folder, even if you could, it would break all the links in your registry and shortcuts.
