The ESA also known as the Entertainment Software Association, doesn't want preservation of old games as well as restore the functionality of older video games that aren't supported by their publisher. Because they believe its illegal hacking to keep them playable and all hacking is associated with piracy. Here is what they say about it.

The Entertainment Software Association doesn’t want anyone to restore the functionality of older videogames that are no longer supported by their publisher, because, says ESA, this is “hacking,” and all hacking is “associated with piracy.”

that modifying games to connect to a new server (or to avoid contacting a server at all) after publisher support ends—letting people continue to play the games they paid for—will destroy the video game industry.

Not even Museums and Archives can preserve abandoned games.

What ? that doesn't make ANY DAMN SENSE, whatsoever. I purchased the game, when it came out and so when the servers or the publisher abandoned the servers, I should be able to connect it to new servers made by other users in order to play the game I paid for, how is this harming the video game industry exactly ? they ABANDONED IT, meaning they don't give two flying shits about what I do to the game now. Imagine if EA just decides to cut off BF3 multiplayer servers for everyone, of course some people are going to make servers so people can play online again with friends or just for fun, how is it harming the game company if they're just leaving it rot ? makes no sense.
