R9 295X2 or GTX 980?

lorenzertlmaier

Hey guys,

Quick and easy question: I live in Germany and right now theres an offer on Ebay for a 295X2 for 650 bucks. Would you prefer it over a 980? I think the 295X2 is way better. Am I right?

The 295x2 will perform much better in games that take advantage of CrossFireX, but will also consume far more power and have slightly limited case compatibility due to the 120MM AIO.

I think it's quite a bit better but it uses more power/heat, doesn't work as well for some things because it's crossfire, adding another in the future will not do much compared to a 980. I say it depends on whether you think you'll ever use SLI and if you think you will, get the 980. If 1 card is what you're stopping at and you have a big enough PSU, get the 295x2.

GPUBoss is the absolute worst comparison website, all of the xBoss websites are.

Go for the 295x2 IF your power supply can handle it.

Never ever ever use GPUBoss or CPUBoss for comparisons, they're the worst.

If there was carboss.com they would probably determine a cars performance by how many wheels it has.

If you're aware of that, why did you post the link in the first place?  :D

295x2 is better IF the game you are playing are xfire optimized if not, just go with a single card. Also if you don't have a 1000w psu, it may add to the cost.

I'm in the same boat and I'm leaning towards 295x2 since it is much faster when games support CF (most do from what I've heard). Unless I can find a relatively cheap 980, I'll get a 295x2 (or wait for 390X).

It also depends on the resolution/display you're using. I've got a r9 295x2 and was disappointed with it's perfomance in 1080p. Right now I'm using an 3440x1440 display and I'm perfectly statisfied with it's performance. But as freemini said you could simply wait for the 300 series...

On another issue, any information about the 295x2 and the upcoming directx12?

Will dx12 be able to use the whole 8gb of memory from the 295x2?

I ask because I am currently debating to either get a 295x2 or save 120 euros and get a 980 G1 and also save myself from crossfire and multi GPU issues.

The 8GB can be used in any game today if needed.
