First PC build

Go to solution Solved by Dzzope,

I would suggest not going with a 4790K. A 4790 would save you the money because you will need at least 8GB of ram.

People say 16GB is ideal for content creation but you can get away with 8GB first.

Xeon for the price of an i5, near the same speed and with HT... best of all worlds.. Also it's locked so can't oc, just get a reasonable board to go with it.

So from what i've learned in this ttopic, is that amd isn't close to as good as Intel..

This is why you go intel:

http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/66683-intel-devils-canyon-i7-4790k-performance-review-8.html

This would be my pick.. So much more bang for your buck than the rest (apart from maybe the GPU, not looked at all the other builds)

Slightly (very slightly) slower cpu that the one you marked but stay away from Kingston V300.. It's a bait and switch (They changed the specs and components).. Intel 730 is a damn good drive and your getting 240GB vs 120. Worth it for the slight drop in cpu

swapped a few things.

Now why and i7-4790 instead of an i5-4460?

Now why and i7-4790 instead of an i5-4460?

you mentioned content creation.. this would be slightly more helpful and it doesn't cost much more

EDIT: It does cost a bit more but it's worth it. http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i7-4790-vs-Intel-Core-i5-4460

Now why and i7-4790 instead of an i5-4460?

Since content creation programs are multi threaded, the i7 would yield better results than the i5 as it has hyperthreading.

An i7 would have 4 physical cores and 4 virtual cores which would essentially mean it has 8 cores.

Gr8White_Bear's build is pretty good.

Ok, got it. Would rendering video be fast on the i5-4460?

it's decent but not as fast as the i7 4790

content creation uses hyper threading, so you're better off with the i7 4790 as it has 4 cores AND 4 virtual cores. so technically, you could say it has 8 cores. ^^^^^^

I had changed it, but didn't post it here.. Thanks. :)

Is the motherboard a good choice? It has built in graphics with the 4790, so i can get the graphics card last..

you won't need a Z97 board for a locked i7.  go for H97.

That looks like a cheaper alternative... A quick search on the internet has people calling it an i7 without the igpu.

Unfortunately I have very little knowledge of Xeon CPUs. Discuss this with OP if you may...
