A friend of mine has earbuds that only plays the high tones of whatever song he's listening to, and he has to press and hold on to a button to hear any other sounds/tones. (he got the headphones with a really old flip phone) Looking for any ideas so that he doesn't have to hold onto a button to listen to his music. I've tried them on IPhone, Android, and my pc and it's the same issue on all platforms. He's an extreme environmentalist so he's trying to avoid throwing them away. Thanks

Without any useful information it is impossible to diagnose something like this over the internet. Cheap earbuds are not worth saving, ditch your friend fro someone more practical, unless you like them, at which point buy a new identical pair and switch them out without telling, pretend you fixed them.

This is actually funny I had the opposite problem with my older iPhone that every headphone with a mic in their cable sounded extremely muffled( not beats muffled like the singer disappeared and you couldn't hear anything but muffled voices and instruments).

But that was a problem with the source I'm not sure what is your friend problem without more info.

Try fiddling with the plug, i.e. from the position of all plugged in, pull it out just a tad (1mm or something) while giving it something like 1/8 of a twist. Sometimes the position of the polarities of the plug missed the polarities of the jack by a little bit.
