Hi everyone

A month or two ago I got a Gigabyte R9 280x (REV 1.0) for £100

I put it in crossfire with a 7870 xt and it was working ok.

A week or two ago I disabled crossfire to run the separately, and thats when the trouble started. In crossfire, neither cards got above 90% load or 65ºC. Running on its own, the 280x goes 100%. The first issue I had was CCC not giving it full welly so I upped the power to 20% and it stopped throttling, and it gets up to 76ºC. In benchmarking I ran furmark and furmakrk's CPU load and it did not crash, it sat there and ran in (with the fans on around 85%). However when I start a game, it will run for a few minutes then do a weird flash, then a screen with vertical lines, then go back to the game for a few seconds and unless I quit, the system crashes. If I quit the game in time, the computer will keep going as normal.

The bit I find weird is that it can run the benchmarking software with full load on the CPU and GPU and not fall. And it gets up to 76ºC. In games it might get from 69-73ºC and crash.

The two main games I have tested are BF4 and Trine 2, both with graphics to the max however I have tried other games such as Bioshock Infinite and BF3 (seems to run BF3 ok)

I still have the second GPU in the computer, plugged into a third monitor. When the computer crashes, the 3rd monitor still displayed what it was before, but freezes. I have tested the 280x in another computer with Trine 2 and again, it crashes. I have used a separate 650W PSU only plugged into the 280x and it crashes.

Specs:

AMD 8320 @ 4.0Ghz (not tinkered with that yet)

Gigabyte r9 280x REV 1.0, latest F13 VBIOS with 14.12 drivers (msi afterburner says Driver Version: 9.14.19.91989, Catalyst: 14.12)

8GB corsair vengeance 1600Mhz

ASRock 970 Extreme3

XFX Pro 650W 80+ bronze

Windows 7 SP1, all the latest updates

I don't know what to try now. Is there anything I can do that might fix it or should I try and RMA it? I think it's still under warranty.

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks

CPU: 8320, GPU: 7870 Myst, Motherboard: Asrock 970 extreme3, PSU: XFX Pro 650W, RAM: 8GB Corsair Vengeance 1600Mhz, Case: Zalman Z11
