A very basic question

My home connection is on a captive portal. If there is inactivity, I am automatically logged out of the portal, but I want an always on internet. Can pinging an external server 24*7 solve the problem? Also, would it create any problems?

That really depends on the device that is doing the captive portal authentication. Best thing for you to do is just try it out and see the result. Running a constant ping to something should not result in any kind of real performance hit so just go for it.
