Case Predicament

Go to solution Solved by dmanschramm,

Hello LTT fans out there, I am planning my next pc upgrade and I currently don't know which case I should use.

Currently the only parts I will carry over from my current rig is 2 ssds, a 3.5 inch hdd, a couple fans, networking card and maybe my 750ti (want to upgrade)

So I either want to go itx with an i5, not sure which mobo then, and  an itx gpu

Or atx/eatx with an i5 with the msi z97sli plus for some dare I say future proofing with either dual 960s or a 970.

So my question really is should I go mid tower (then which case/gpu) or itx (then which case again and mobo)

Thanks for the help

Some people are bent on ITX form factor. They love the small form factor that goes along with it.

I personally think that when you build a PC, you're almost forced to a large-ish form factor, so I go with ATX. It allows for more upgradeability and such. It also gives more airflow and space to work with.

But ITX is a smaller, more compact build that will be less 'intrusive' on your space. The choice is yours. Depends on if you really like the smaller form factor. ITX will generally provide more heat output and more hassle when building in their cases, but it's all about size for some. You probably can't do SLI, but you can do max dual SLI in some. The GPUs will also usually be of higher temps and won't overclock as well.

Hope this helps in your decision!

go with an ATX mid tower

it will give you more options for expanding or customizing in the future, but it will still be compact and portable

some of the mid towers I like are the 450D, S340, R5, and silverstone has some nice ones too i think

Corsair Air 540? Pretty good for all your needs. Also has a nice storage compartment and is divided into to blocks: Mobo, CPU , GPU , HDD and the second block is the PSU and any Optical Drives.

CPU: Intel i7-4790K @ 4.7GHz --- RAM: Lenovo 1600MHz 16GB --- MOBO: Gigabyte Z97-G7 --- GPU: EVGA GTX 970 FTW ACX 2.0+--- PSU: Corsair CX600 --- Case: Corsair Air 540 --- Cooler: NZXT Kraken X61 --- OS: Windows 8.1 --- Monitor: 24" AOC G2460P + Dell 19" --- Mouse: Logitech MX Perfromance --- Keyboard: Corsair K70 (Cherry MX Brown) --- Audio: Sennheiser HD558

Don't buy a GTX 980, it's overpriced! Buy 2 GTX 970s or 2 R9 290s intstead (the R9 290s would even be cheaper)

ITX is great if you don't have space / will move it around allot.

Personally after going full tower in my last build, I wouldn't do it again unless I was doing a full custom loop and dropping some serious cash on it.

Mid tower or itx would be best for you.. realistically there is no point in Eatx unless your gpu farming something.

I don'T PreSS caPs.. I juST Hit THe keYboARd so HarD iT CriTs :P

Quote or @dzzope to get my attention..
