Hey there,

After my PC broke down and I can't identify what the error is (psu and graphics card are both quite new though) I'll buy a new mobo and CPU and try out what the dead part is.

Question no1: Can I return opened packages and does that depend on the place/site in buying from?

Question no2: Since I had a gigabyte ga-970-ud3 and a and phenom II x4 965 BE what would you Mb and cpu recommend to replace it with? My graphics card is a msi 280x and I'm running 8gb ddr3 ram.

Also I'm from germany (ordering from amazon(.de!) or alternate.de) and my budget is about 200€, if necessary 250€.

Is the fx6300 any good? I've seen complaints that the extra cores aren't needed for gaming but is there a good phenom alternative?

Thank you very much :)

EU has laws for consumer protection.. You can return any product within I believe 30 day, no questions asked. (no re-stocking fees allowed, they have to pay postage unless it's expressly declared that you do in their Ts & Cs.

Go Intel for CPU.. For gaming and single threaded performance AMD is in the dust.. AMD is awesome where your budget limited and need lots of cores.

Basically any z97 board that has the features you want + cpu within your budget.

I don'T PreSS caPs.. I juST Hit THe keYboARd so HarD iT CriTs :P

Quote or @dzzope to get my attention..

Can you describe when/how the PC broke down and what does it look like when you try and turn it on?

You should be able to return opened packages, especially if it was dead on arrival though it does depend on the retailer.

If youre set on buying a new cpu/mobo maybe i suggest an h97 board with either an i3 or if you can an i5.

The upgrade from the phenom x4 to FX-6300 can be worth it for gaming depending on what type of games you play the most.

Also the FX-6300 once overclocked properly can be a good match for your R9 280X in modern games at 1080p.

..and your motherboard is an 8+2 power phase board it can support even the FX-8320 or FX-8320E (pick which ever is cheaper) and overclock it. (this is what i would do in your situation for 1080p gaming if you want to max out your GPU in most games)

If you have to scrap your board just order a cheap H97 motherboard and core i5-4460.

| CPU: Core i7-8700K @ 4.89ghz - 1.21v  Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX Z370-E GAMING  CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i V2 |

Ive been benchmarking my gpu which usually makes my stuff run at about 80C. After a sudden shutdown i couldnt get my pc running at all.

Thanks for your replies, they are quite diverse though. If possible I'd like to stick with am3+ so I can replace either Mb or CPU depending on which is dead and return the other.

What sort of troubleshooting did you try?

With direct X 12 and Vulkan the newer games will start using the extra cores more and more. FX 6300 6 core and FX 8320(E) 8 core are good upgrades.

Can you get the motherboard to load the Bios?

To be honest: not that much. I've tried my psu in another PC which is also dead but I managed to light up a led on the Mb. I was thinking the new gpu wouldn't break down at 80c yet and the ram should probably not be a problem, right?
