I need to upgrade my CPU. I plan to game at 1080p and 1440p with a GTX 980 or 780ti but I don't have a good enough CPU.

Would the extra 100$ to get the 4790k instead of the 4690k be worth it?

I want to consider if the 4790k will preform better in games than the 4690k in the future.

And also is stock cooling good enough for either of them if just running at stock speeds under a regular game load.

Thanks.

If you can afford it go with 4790K, but 4690K is enough already (if you want to save more).

The 4790k doesn't have much of an advantage over the 4690k in games so if you're only gaming go with the 4690k but if you plan to do any media of sorts go with the 4790k. Stock cooling is good enough.

Well... if you are running at stock speeds, why get a "K" CPU? Just get a locked processor and save yourself some money.

xeon e3 1231 v3 is basically the same as the i5, same price but with HT and not unlocked.. if your not going for oc, it's worth a look.

As for games don't use more threads.. It depends very much on the game. Something like GW2 will give you a significant boost going i5 to i7 (or 4 core to 4 core with HT)

I don'T PreSS caPs.. I juST Hit THe keYboARd so HarD iT CriTs :P

The xeon e3 1231 v3 seems good in comparison to an 4690k. Gets rid of oc in exchange for HT? Is that basically it or am I missing something?

Also is this a good z97 mobo for gaming with these CPUs?

Basically, yes.

However, here is a hint. Since you are not overclocking (duh, it's a xeon!), don't waste money on a z97 mobo. Instead, get the Xeon 1230 and a h81 mobo, and you just saved yourself a crapton of money.
