I have a project that I will soon be building that is seriously space constricted. Can anyone provide any information on using this type of riser? Or can anyone offer a better alternative. The object is to get the GPU to lay flat instead of directly on top of the motherboard.

There are right angle adapters, but I recommend a flexible cable. There's really no performance impact, but be aware, if you get a cheap and improperly shielded one, it can cause some issues, and you needa  really good shielding to do crossfire /sli.
