How do you partition a hard drive? I want to split a 1 Tb hard drive, half for Mint and half for Ubuntu.

ermmm im no expert in non-windows but i believe if you install one of those OS (mint say for example) then go to whatever the equivalent of disk management on mint. Then you can partion part of the drive. Then when you come to install the other OS just make sure to select the partition that doesnt have mint on it

Burn GParted to a disc or flash drive, boot to it, and partition away.

If you want to partition your hard drive on windows, click on the start menu and then right click on "computer".

there should be an option called "manage".

From there you can select the particular drive that you want to partition. Select the drive and shrink the volume.

Set the size and it will format it. 

OR you can leave it unformatted.

This, or you can use the live USB for Ubuntu (used for installation) and boot off the usb (use the "Try Ubuntu First" option) and use gparted GUI. Also, I think you can partition the drive during the actual Ubuntu installation process....but I can't remember off hand.
