A week long break just started for me, which means I have an ass-ton of time on my hands. What better to do than to get around to finally overclocking my CPU?

I have Prime95, CPU-Z, Core Temp, and have watched the Devil's Canyon OC guide a few times. I have read a bit on it and watched a couple videos, along with lurking the OC posts in the forums.

Is there anything else I should do/install/know? I will hopefully start OC'ing tomorrow.

Trial version good? I don't want to have to buy anything.

Yep it's fine

Aside from AIDA64 (trial is fine), you're good to go.  Post here if you have any problems  :)

The stress test doesn't seem to work in teh aida64 trial. I start it and it immediatly fails...(haven't oc'ed yet) Any thoughts on what to use for a stress test? Will an Aida64 benchmark be good?

That is legitimately concerning.  Do you have any overclock or modified settings applied?  Your processor should be able to run an AIDA64 test continuously and indefinitely at stock settings.  If it can't you have a processor that can be RMA'ed, as it is defective (ie. it can't properly compute at advertised speeds).

No oc settings applied. When I click start stability test, it outputs "Stability test started (then date)" "Stability test failed (then date)"'. It happens as soon as I click start test, so I think it might be something about the trial version of aida64. I have had no problems the past few months running the processor at stock.

Also in my motherboard it will not let me do any sort of cpu overclocking(literally can't change any cpu core clock ratios/multipliers/voltage, BIOS says "these features do not work if the processor is not unlocked(or something similar)), however oc genie works.

It was running at 38C on idle in the bios at 4.4ghz w/ oc genie applied....and the voltages didn't look like they changed (didn't check cpu z, tho).

It sounds like you don't have an unlocked processor, then.  Or your processor is very screwy.  If you open up CPU-Z or some similar program, what exactly does it say in the CPU Name cell?

The trial version of AIDA64 functions in exactly the same way as the full version.  If it says that the stability test failed, then your cpu is unstable at the current settings.  You probably have a bad processor, RMA it.  If you can no longer RMA it through the retailer, you should be able to do it through Intel, as your processor is nonfunctional at advertised speeds.

snip

It is a 4790K. I will try updating my bios next time I get on my desktop and I think I might have downloaded a screwy version of Aida64 because the stress test outputs test started and failed at the exact same time. Since everything has been running fine at stock and my temps have been good ~26C idle, ~58C far cry 4 ~60C Unreal Engine 4 ~35C CS:GO. Those numbers were from my memory from NZXT Cam software, so they are probably a little off.

If it is the processor, that would suck because I am lazy and don't really want to waste time RMA'ing it. Also someone threw away my return shipping labels yesterday but I still have all the boxes and stuff.

So it says the words "Intel Core i7 4790" in the Name cell and "Intel® Core i7-4790K CPU @ 4.00 GHz" in the Specification cell of the CPU tab of CPU-Z?  I'm asking for these specific things because it will show you exactly what your motherboard thinks is the cpu.  If it says something other than those things, then there is certainly something wrong on the hardware level.

The fact that so many things are going wrong leads me to believe that your processor is bad.  The chances of your bios not allowing overclocking (suggesting a non-k processor) and AIDA64 stopping the test instantly at the same time while nothing is wrong with the processor itself seem very low.  I can't think of any other explanation at the moment.

Just because it hasn't crashed in games does not mean you have a stable processor.

In the name cell it says "Intel Core i7 4790K". I installed a different trial of aida64 to see if something was wrong with that, and the stability test ran perfectly for the 5 minutes I tested. It seems to be fine in those aspects then. I have not had any chance to try OC'ing again/update BIOS. I will post back if I have any more problems . Thanks for your help so far!  :)

Ok then it was a weird download of AIDA64.  These things can happen, they just don't happen very frequently.  The bios is a weirder thing though.  It should let you overclock.  Perhaps it will function when you update to the latest bios version.

Let me know how that goes.
