Is there any difference in a optical cable when it comes to sound?

Since Spotify has finally come to Playstation i can use it for music, but i use a Optical cable to my receiver with my ps3, the audio however sounds kinda shitty on the ps3 compared to what i get on the AUX on pc and my phone.

Optical cable is superior to just about everything on the planet. The S/PDIF transport used by most consumer electronics, however, has it's limits.

I would check to make sure the console is set to stereo (for testing only, I'd nothing else), and that your cable has no kinks in it.

S/PDIF is fine for stereo sound, 5.1 needs to be compressed.

Remember your soundcard may emphasise the bass and/or adding a bit of echo so you have the feeling of a "full" sound.
