So, I was thinking(duck and cover!) about PCs and consoles, when I started wondering, just house bad are consoles really? Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not doubting the pcmasterrace, I know where my loyalties lie, PCs are far better as they have better customization, upgradeability, airflow, interface, etc. But how bad are consoles, in a spec to spec point of view? Clock speed, cores, processor model, ram, etc.?

Just a guy who peaked at building back in the days of the GTX 980. If you see me here, assume i have technical knowledge akin to a committed hobbyist builder back then. If something's changed, you'll need to tell me(nicely plz). I'm probably asking for help with the modern build scene since I have no clue what's going on.

They're ok sometimes for cheap hassle free sofa gaming i guess i can see the attraction for that reason but PC has console beat in pretty much every category, im really looking forward to Steam boxes and the new Nvidia console etc to really take off and see how much more of the console market we can take.

This conversation was relevant when last gen consoles came out. The thing is that console hardware is about 1-2 years old compared to current PC hardware when they come out. The thing why they still get such good sales is optimization and exclusive titles. Devs know they only have to make games to one platform and one kind of hardware. Thats why the last games that came to PS2 and also PS3 were graphically amazing compared to games on just released consoles.

They have their place. We pc people just make fun of them because is more of a running gag than anything else. And quite honestly the average console gamer couldn't care less about 8x AA, 4k native resolutions, 60/144 refresh rates, modding, or alot of what the pc has to offer. Basically they are "good enough". For perspective, if you look at the steam statistics, the majority of users are running potatoes even though they have the options available to them. But most of them only play some of the popular games and even they don't all the extra graphic enhancements.

So, while it is really nice to be able to run at max setting at 60+ fps, it is not required once the game is able to immerse you which console games manage to do just fine.

Being a PC and console gamer, I would say that games just look better on the PC; however, any games that are console exclusives, I buy.  Do I care about graphics when I play on the console?  At first I do but I am over it in a few minutes.  To say that consoles are bad in general is being a PC Elitist snob (saying PC Master Race).  A game is a game no matter what platform you chose.

I have a potato!

The specs I wouldn't mind if I didn't have to pay 60 fucking dollars per game and that is not even including online gaming which is an additional fee. The specs are irrelevant I share the opinion that both Microsoft and Sony won't release another "generation" of hardware and just move their walled garden, exploitative services to cloud based gaming and such and just use current hardware or small set top boxes or dongles to stream the content in.

Now some might say that latency just isn't there and won't be there for years, but my response is that console people are perfectly happy about playing first person shooters at 30 FPS, on P2P with terrible pings and with a stupid fucking controller so they will adapt to the latency just fine.

only place where consoles rain supreme over pc is when theres you and your mates, plenty of beers and a good game thats split screen! never beat the days me and my friends would sit for like 24hours trying to complete games like resident evil 5 on the hardest setting and getting all unlocks. or trying to play all the halos in 1 day! (there were 3 at the time)

Gaming PC: • AMD Ryzen 7 3900x • 16gb Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 3200mhz • Founders Edition 2080ti • 2x Crucial 1tb nvme ssd • NZXT H1• Logitech G915TKL • Logitech G Pro • Asus ROG XG32VQ • SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless

I play on both and the only thing consoles do that I like is controllers. I find them more comfortable to use and less spazy when it comes to player movement.

Spec wise the PC beats out consoles by a severe margin.

Knowledge is power, guard it well.

  • 2 weeks later...

Is there ANY modding to be done to consoles? (hardware obviously, not software)
