Launch titles sometimes do not have crossfire profiles as you may know...

Games currently out are pretty good if crossfire is given,...

So it could even be months before crossfire profiles are out on new games,..meaning your in single GPU mode,... this is something to weigh into the equation.

Get the 290x, as single GPU's don't have these issues...

/Or wait until the 300 series is out and find out how much better they are and what price they will be.

If it's too much, I'd go for 2x 290X's if you can't afford the top notch 300 series.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

are 2xr9 290 ok for setup

I'm running 2 x r9 290x for 4K. So far so good. Other than the extreme hot temp, everything else seems to be running well. Or rather, very fine.

Absolutely, but if your CPU is weaksauce,.. you may limit their full potential.

Go look at reviews for Crossfire 290X (Make sure reviews are done in the last 6 months, most have a date at the top of the page when done)

One is good for 1440p, two is to make sure it never drops below the MIN-FPS of the panel freesync window.

Just remember that at the moment Crossfire does not support FreeSync, so you'll be waiting for drivers to mature before you can utilize the full power of both those 290X cards. Until then though, you can still play with FreeSync turned off.

snip

If you are looking into buying a freesync monitor, do not consider the 7990 as an option. It is two Tahiti (7970/280x) gpus which are not compatible with Freesync's VRR.

The 290(x) is pretty much your only option at the moment. Crossfire is also not supported at this time, but is scheduled to have a compatible driver release sometime in April.

R9 295x2 is much faster than the HD 7990 and much cheaper ($650). It also supports FreeSync so that would be the golden ticket. Although like stated Crossfire FreeSync drivers aren't available at the moment so you will just need to wait to get FreeSync support for the card.
