I have a Corsair air 240 case. I currently have a H100i in the case but i want to build my own custom loop. The case has a 120x 240 radiator support on the front of the case but i dont think it will be enough to cool my OC CPU and my GPU on the one rad. So I was thinking of installing a 120 rad in the top of the case. But then there is no room for the fan to sit on top or below the rad. If I were to do put the radiator in the top I would need to mod the top of by case to fit the fan, and at that point i could just add a 240mm rad instead of the 120. Or i could install a 80x160 mm rad in the back of the case and not need to mess with the case. but then I would need to get two 80mm fans and they are loud as far as i am aware.

Would i be better going the simple route or going for a bigger radiator in the top?

If it was me, I would mod the top of the case, then run 2 x 240 rads in it. 45mm thick if possible, if not 40mm.

Your going to need minimum of 60mm clearance for the fan and rad in each location.

I think you'll be able to mod the top of the case and keep it pretty clean, due to the plastic fascia on the top of the case.
